Why Nintendo Labo for the Nintendo Switch is Absolutely Amazing

In this video we cover the controversial topic that is Nintendo Labo, the just-announced cardboard activity center for the Nintendo Switch, Launching 4/20/2018.

Ok, I get it, its cardboard. Its cardboard that you fold into things like houses, pianos and fishing poles. I get that it doesn't speak to your core game play desires. But all those things are why I think Labo for the Nintendo Switch is absolutely amazing.

So let's talk about what Labo is. It's a sheet of perforated cardboard you pop out and fold into other things. It's a project, and one you can fully customize and make your own. Depending on the kit there are ways you can incorporate both the Joy-Cons and the Switch itself into the cardboard you've assembled.

Too many times kids these days are inside on devices, not interacting with people and the only thing they're building are houses and fences in Minecraft. Labo allows you to build something, together, and have something that is tangible. A tangible video game? Think less game, more augmented reality with a splash of make-your-own-adventure books and some basic model making.

For someone to be successful with Labo they need to be able to put things together by following directions. You know that bookshelf from Ikea you can't put together? Maybe if you played with Labo when you were younger you'd be able to assemble the Hemnes or a Trysil or even a Hurdal.

The thing I like most about the Labo, besides the ideal of actually building something REAL is the fact that with Labo kids get to to make something unique. In a world where we keep telling kids that everyone is exceptional, there are no differences and everyone gets participation trophies Labo helps to give kids a sense of individuality again. We need more Labo projects in our world, and I can't wait to see what people create!
