The most significant of the French Romantic authors was Victor Hugo, full name Victor-Marie Hugo (born February 26, 1802, Besançon, France—died May 22, 1885, Paris). He was a poet, novelist, and playwright. Despite being one of France's greatest poets, he is more recognized outside of France for books like Notre-Dame de Paris (1831) and Les Misérables (1862).

Victor Hugo was a significant Romanticist supporter. He called for an action drama that could transcend Classical categories and combine the sublime with the grotesque in the prelude to his verse play Cromwell (1827), which he considered as fitting to modern man, the conflict between matter and soul.

Victor Hugo is recognized as a popular author who was skilled at capturing the strength and simplicity of everyday joys and sorrows in his writing. In addition, he is remembered for the verbal originality and technical mastery with which he wrote songs that ranged from personal lyrics to epic visionary and prophetic poems.

Victor Hugo produced an enormous output of work, including the plays Cromwell (1827), Hernani (1830), and Ruy Blas (1838); and the poetry collections Les Châtiments (1853) and Les Contemplations (1856).
