PRGE 2018 Interview Hyperkin's Celia Schilling: Mega Retron HD, Retron 77 & HDMI XBox & Dreamcast

In this video, we visit with Celia from Hyperkin and talk about all the exciting new releases they had on display at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo.

Hyperkin has been hard at work over the last few years and making some of the best selling clone consoles for the NES and Super NES. Well in recent months and years they've turned their attention to other consoles and expanded their offerings, first with the Retron 77 which can play Atari 2600 games, and more recently with the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis-compatible Mega Retron HD

One of the first questions I have for Celia was regarding the availability of the Retron 77. Since it was originally announced, demand has been through the roof. There's definitely a good reason, I don't recall seeing any composite-compatible Atari 2600 clones before now, let alone one equipped with an HDMI output that could play original cartridges. I was pleased to hear that the Retron 77 are starting to flow again after the initial batch was shipped. I know in speaking with Ryan at Castlemaniagames.com that he has received and fulfilled all of his back orders, which is great news.

Next up was the Mega Retron HD, a new clone console from Hyperkin that they first teased earlier this year. The Mega Retron HD can play both Sega Genesis and Sega Mega Drive Game cartridges, features 720p resolution, 4x3 or 16x9 aspect ratio switches, PAL or NTSC region switches, and it looks like it really captures the aesthetic not only of the system but of the controller. The mega Retron HD should be shipping around the same time as this video goes live.

Finally from Hyperkin we checked out both of the HDMI cables available for the original Xbox and the Sega Dreamcast. Both of them are plug-and-play solutions, and one thing I was not originally aware of was the fact that the Xbox HDMI cable is actually officially licensed and recognized by Microsoft. That's a pretty good endorsement to have.
