In this video we unbox and test out the eXtremeRate Play Vital cases designed for the Nintendo Switch.

I have tested an absolute plethora of cases for the Nintendo Switch. Hard cases. Soft cases. Hybrid cases. Which is why when eXtremeRate contacted me to ask if I wanted to check out their new Play Vital case for the Nintendo Switch Lite, my ears perked up. eXtremeRate is known for their mod accessories. I've even done videos showing how to install their LED light kit into a PS4 controller and one of their faceplates for the Nintendo Switch dock. Seeing them branch out into accessories for the Switch Lite is a bit of a change for them.

The Play Vital case comes in a variety of different colors, but one thing that was a bit surprising was the fact that they did not offer a case that matched the stock colors of the Switch Lite. I'm shocked there wasn't a yellow case, or a black, turquoise, or Coral.

In addition to the case itself, eXtremeRate also includes a tempered glass screen protector. These are a lot better than the thin plastic ones that they could have included, as it truly provides a layer of protection against scratches without leaving that plasticly film look on your screen. Extreme rate also includes a set of wipes to help you get the screen protector installed, a nice bonus in my mind.

The two-piece design completely surrounds and encompasses your Switch Lite, protecting it top and bottom from bumps, bangs, and impacts. On the three units I tested, they all snap together fairly easily, however there was a bit of an alignment issue on the Blue version on one of the corners. Since none of the other colors were affected, I don't know if this was a one-off issue with this specific case, if it's an issue with the mold for this color, but I have let eXtremeRate know of the issue.

With the Switch Lite in the case, I really dug the texture on the case itself. It wasn't a slippery plastic, it had more of a velvety sort of feel in the hands. It felt soft to the touch while still being a hard material. There were two parts of the case, however, that I could see a sLite redesign really making the user experience better. Both involves opening up holes to give you better access to buttons. The first change I would make would be to make the holes around the minus and plus button bigger. This way you don't have to dig the meat of your thumb into the hole as much to press the button. The second change I would make would be to make the area around the face buttons similar to the opening around the D-pad. I think this would improve gameplay experience tremendously.

While the Switch Lite cannot be docked to a TV, there are charging docks that will allow you to charge the unit without having to simply plug in the USB-C cable and lay it down. The thickness of the mold on the eXtremeRate case does not allow contact with the USB-C charge port on either of my desktop stands. This is something that is a definite bummer to me, as I would rather charge it in the case on a stand versus laying it down.

Why it RoX:
- Multiple color options
- Feels great in the hand
- Great protection for your Switch Lite
- Relatively easy to put on and take off
- Tempered glass screen protector included
- Good access to all ports and vents

What could be improved?
- OEM color options
- Open up the area around the face buttons and minus button
- Not compatible with desktop charging stands
- Fitment issue on blue case
- Having a grip type design versus a flat design would be more comfortable for me

Should you buy one?
eXtremeRate has done an interesting thing here with branching out into cases for the Switch Lite. I would say this is a good first effort, but it definitely could use some refinement. I don't think it would take much to take this from a good case to a great case, as it is pretty good out of the box. If I could only change one thing about this it would definitely be the opening around the face buttons. This really should have been similar to the d-pad design. I was also surprised they did not come out with variants that matched the stock colors, that would have been a nice touch too. As it is, for under $20 you get a case that thoroughly protects your system, includes a tempered glass screen protector, and looks really sharp.
