Should You Buy the KMD Wireless Bluetooth Pro Controller for the Nintendo Switch
In this video, we unbox, test out and review the Wireless Bluetooth Pro Controller from KMD for the Nintendo Switch.
When it comes to the Nintendo Switch, the Pro Controller from Nintendo is seen by many, including myself, as the way to play the system. The JoyCon grip is okay and all, but it leaves a lot to be desired. One downfall of the Pro Controller is its price. While it is a premium device it also carries a premium price. That being said, many third-party manufacturers have sought to create an alternative to the OEM Pro Controller. That's where KMD comes into play, a brand focused on bringing quality products to gamers at a reasonable price. Their solution is the wireless Pro Controller, and if first impressions mean anything, this promises to be quite good.
Inside the Box, the Wireless Pro Controller also includes a very nice charging cable. Upon initial inspection, I did not catch the fact that it is USB C, not micro USB which some budget controllers would utilize instead. so even while it is targeted at a more budget-conscious consumer having USB C is something you may consider to be more of a premium feature.
Upon charging the controller up, it was really easy to pair to my Switch and Ginger's Switch Lite. The first game I had to try out, due to the fact that this also has a turbo function, is Star Fox. That is a game that I absolutely love playing with the turbo on the blasters. Yes, it's a cheat, but I love using it. turning the turbo on and off with super easy, and he was really effective during gameplay. The one thing I needed to remember was that the turbo button was not the home button, even though it kind of feels like it should be if that makes sense.
I played several more games with the wireless Pro Controller, and I did test out Amiibo support. As expected, Amiibos were not read by the Pro Controller. I honestly don't know of a single third-party controller that does work with Amiibos, and quite honestly I'm okay with that if it helps bring down the overall cost. The balance felt great in the hand, the ZL and ZR triggers felt a little bit wider than the Nintendo Pro Controller, which I liked, and the d-pad was slightly larger too. The vibration felt spot on, he was actually very powerful, and it also felt like they slimmed the controller down in certain areas which I thought made it feel even better in the hand than the Nintendo Pro Controller.
Why it RoX:
- Under $30
- 2 color options
- USB C charging
- Awesome battery life
- Bluetooth
- Slimmer in the hands than the Nintendo Pro Controller
- Strong Rumble
- Sticks and buttons all feel great
- Turbo options
What could be improved?
- No Amiibo support
- Additional colors would be nice
- Not available online
Should you buy one?
Having tested out third-party controllers from a number of different manufacturers I am confident in saying this is the best third-party Pro Controller that I have tried to date for the Switch. The balance is great, the sticks are amazing, and I like the fact that they slimmed it down in strategic places. I can overlook the fact that it does not have Amiibo support because, quite honestly, I don't really use my Amiibo in-game. The one thing you may have trouble with is actually finding one if your local store does not carry them or if you do not have a local store. For the money, this is definitely something you should consider.
