Is This The Best Budget Switch "Dock"? Should You Buy the Yōk HDMI Travel Cable for Nintendo Switch?
In this video, we unbox and test it the YōK HDMI Travel Cable designed for the Nintendo Switch.
There are many reasons why the Nintendo Switch has been so amazingly popular, and being able to take console-quality games with you on the road is a major factor. Yes, you can enjoy these games in handheld mode, but connecting to a television is what I prefer to do. Packng up the sick Switch Dock, it even a smaller travel dock, can be a bit of a nuisance, but that's where YōK has a solution in their HDMI Travel Cable.
The beauty in this cable is it's simplicity. One end features a male USB-C to connect to your Switch & a female USB-C for power input. No AC adapter is included but YōK recommends either using the OEM Nintendo power supply or YōK also has their own. On the opposite side of the 18-foot long cable is a standard HDMI connector. Unfortunately, you cannot connect accessories or an Ethernet cable to the YōK Travel Cable.
I connected the cable to my EZCap 284 to record my footage and everything looked to work fine. It wasn't until I started editing the footage that I saw that the audio wasn't captured. I've had this issue in the past, This is an HDCP issue, I've run into it before with the EZCap, it has nothing to do with the YōK cable
When I started playing I thought the colors were a little darker, be as I mentioned in the video itself. While I was editing I was able to see the raw footage as it was being passed through and it looked just fine. Actually, it looked better than fine, it looked great! For a $30 cable, I have to say this really looked very good, and it didn't add any noticable lag or delay. I played a lot of games through this cable, including platformers and fighting games, all of which felt terrific.
Why it RoX:
- Only $30
- Super-long 18ft cable
- Good audio and video quality
- No additional lag
- Compact & portable
- Can be used in-home in-lieu of buying a separate dock
What could be improved?
- Separate power supply needed
- No ports for external accessories
- Cable-design instead of dongle design isn't as convenient
- For only $10 more the CharJenPro Stingray had a lot more functionality
Should you buy one?
If you travel with an original Switch in the regular and want to connect to a TV, this is about the least expensive way you'll find to do it at this time. The overall audio and video quality are both decent, and you will be hard pressed to get a more compact design. It does omit a USB input for things like 3rd party accessories and it lacks an Ethernet port, and if those things matter to you just don't the extra $10 and get a CharJenPro Stingray, you'll honestly be happier. But if you have a decent WIFI connection, online play doesn't matter, or you don't use USB accessories, this is a pretty good value. it would be an even better value at $20-$25 since it still needs a power supply, but beggers can't be choosers. This is another example of a good value oriented product from Yōk, and something you may want to consider.
