Hyperkin CES 2020 Announcement: RetroN JR In Development - Game Boy, Game Boy Color & GBA on Your TV

In this video, we discuss Hyperkin's announcement of the beginning of the RetroN JR Development at CES 2020.

Each year, electronics manufacturers plan strategic announcements around the consumer electronics show, or CES, in January. The video game industry is no different, and Hyperkin has a very cool new device to talk about. They've started development on what they are calling the RetroN JR, and it promises some pretty cool features

Please be aware, this product has simply been announced that they're working on development. No shipment date, pricing, availability, or finalized features have been communicated at this time.

The idea behind the RetroN JR is that it will allow you to conveniently play your Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advanced cartridges on your TV. The RetroN Junior features a 720p HDMI output, making it very easy to connect it to your modern flat-panel television. In addition to HDMI, the RetroN JR also has AV outputs too! That means you can play an older CRT tube televisions as well. There will also be a 4:3 & 16:9 aspect ratio switch and an integrated stereo headphone jack. Pretty neat.

The face of the RetroN JR appears to have two buttons, power and reset, and a USB input. It is unclear at this time if you can connect a second USB controller to this port for two-player games, if you charge a wireless controller through this port, if it's used for firmware updates, or if you could even load ROMs via a thumb drive. The design is definitely inspired by their latest version of the SupaBoy Black Gold edition, and it looks slick! Hyperkin has included one of their excellent scout controllers, and it appears to be wireless. That tells me that this system may have Bluetooth capabilities, or it may also include a 2.4GHz USB dongle which plugs into that front port. A USB C cable is going to be included, but it is unknown at this time if that is for main power to the system or to charge the controller. I'll be interested to learn more about that.

We do not have details at this time regarding pricing or availability. As they are in the process of development, they are testing whether or not it will be a hardware or software-based system. It is possible they could use a system similar to the Smart Boy to play games on the RetroN JR, but this is still TBD. As with much of this system, more details will be available in the coming months.
