How-To Update The Hyperkin Cadet, Scout, & Admiral Bluetooth Controllers for Use on Nintendo Switch!

In this video, we show you how to update the firmware of your Hyperkin Scout, Cadet, and Admiral controllers so that you can use them with the Nintendo Switch.

Since I got them, my Hyperkin Scout and Cadet have been my primary ways of playing my Nintendo Entertainment System and my Super NES. They're comfortable, they have good performance, great battery life, pretty much everything I've been looking for in a wireless controller. One of the things that disappointed me about both them, and the later released Hyperkin Admiral, has been the fact that none of them, even though they are Bluetooth, worked with the Nintendo Switch. Hyperkin has now resolved that issue with a new firmware update.

The firmware update is pretty simple, but one thing you should be cautious of is the fact that Windows may flag the exe program as malicious. I think it has everything to do with the way that the software has been digitally signed, which Hyperkin really needs to go back and address. If you do happen to get a security warning, simply click more info and from within that window you have the option to run the software anyways.

The firmware updater tool is pretty simple and straightforward. the tool will allow you to update the firmware and your Cadet, Scout, or Admiral controller, along with the partnering dongles. Connecting and syncing the controllers to your PC can take a little bit of practice and timing. You need to press the sync button and a split second later insert the cable that connects to your computer. From here you should see that your controller is now connected.

I was shocked that my initial software update actually failed. I was, however, relieved when I was able to run the process a second time and it went through without an issue. From here, you need to pair the controller to your Switch. This once again takes a combination of button presses, on the Scout and the Cadet you press the pairing button and the A button a moment later, and on the Admiral you would press the sync button and any other button to pair it. One thing of note, you can only have so many controllers paired to your Switch, I found this out the hard way and eventually had to delete controllers from my system to be able to pair these

The one thing I really wish is that there was some way to have a button combination that would take me back to the home screen from the Cadet and the Scout. On the Admiral it's easy, you have plenty of buttons, but there's no way to get back to the home screen from the Cadet and the Scout. That's kind of a bummer, especially if you want to switch games in the NES Online or Super NES Online libraries. That's one added function I would love to see Hyperkin release in a future firmware update.

I have to say, I am thrilled with the fact that I can use these controllers now on my Nintendo Switch. Honestly, this is functionality that should have been there from the get-go but I am glad that they are keeping an eye on their legacy product so that we can have added features like this down the road. For the money, these are great controllers and I love that I can now use them with my Switch.
