This is our seventh month being subscribed to Video Games Monthly, there have been some highs, there have been some lows, and there have been some really unique surprises with this subscription service. In August, I had reached out to the folks at VGM to try to limit the number of RPGs I was receiving, as I am not a fan of the genre. Last month I had received a pretty decent box, this month, however, mistakes were made.
Upon opening the box, which arrived around October 9th, I was very disappointed to see the selection of games that were in the box. If you have followed me on the channel for any period of time, you know that, as I stated above, I am not a fan of RPGs or JRPGs. Whether they are on the Famicom, Super Famicom, or N64, I am just not a fan, which is why I requested not to receive RPGs in the future. This box, however, was 1/2 RPGs, and all of those were in Japanese, making them unplayable to me.
What we got:
Famicom: Law of the West - $6
Genesis: X-Men 2 The Clone Wars - $17
Super Famicom: GdLeen - $1
Dragon Quest VI (CIB) - $11
PS2: GTA Vice City - $5
Xbox 360: COD Black Ops II - $11
Total Value = $51
The fact that Video Games Monthly includes an option to import games is really awesome. One of the reasons why I have been subscribed to the service is I desperately want a copy of Super Back to the Future 2 for the Super Famicom. I am hoping to eventually get it. What I don't love, however, is the continued delivery of RPGs to my mailbox. I've asked in the past not to receive RPGs, and I didn't think I would have to tell them each month not to not send RPGs, but that is not something I am interested in having to do each month. I have mentioned in the past that I wish there was a website option to include or exclude specific genres of games that you would be interested in. Unfortunately, this has not happened. I have no desire to get a single RPG, ever. If I could select that as an option, it would help them put games in the hands of people who would enjoy them more.
Hands down the best game in this lot for me is X-Men 2: The Clone Wars. It's interesting that the game just starts as soon as you turn on the system. I've played a little bit of it, it is definitely hard, but so rewarding. COD 2 is the other winner to me, mostly because of the trade-in value. Having the 1Up was a nice bonus, something I've gotten each and every month since I subscribed. However, while the dollar value of these games are good the playthrough value of these games are fairly low to me, except for those 2 I mentioned. For now, I'll be taking a break from VGM.
