Should You Buy the KMD Dual Game Grip Case for the Nintendo Switch
In this video we unbox and test out the KMD Dual Game Grip Case designed for the original Nintendo Switch.
There are a lot of different grip cases out there for the Nintendo Switch. It seems like a new one comes out every day, so how does one differentiate themselves from the others out there? Enter in the KMD Dual Game Grip Case for the Switch. While it is familiar in many ways, it adds some unique features under the hood, or Joy Cons in this case, making it worthy of your consideration.
Where other cases tend to use a fully TPU (hermoplastic Polyurethane) design, the KMD Dual Game Grip Case uses a hybrid design. The areas around the Joy Cons are TPU, sure, but the central part that covers the back of your system is a hard, clear plastic. The TPU sections are raised and not flush with the body of the system, and for me, provides a better overall feel when playing the Switch in handheld mode.
Inside these grips are what makes this grip case special, as under the left and right Joy Con portion of the case is a hidden storage compartment for 1 extra Switch Cart under each side. This makes it easier to take a couple extra games with you on the go without having to bring the entire game case with you. The TPU portion of the grips hold the cartridges securely; I never felt like they were going to come loose or fall out. And even if they did, the Joy Cons themselves would keep them from getting lost.
The clear center portion of the case feels like very thick Lexan to me. It has all the proper cutouts for things such as the cartridge slot, headphone jack, speakers, fans, and the kickstand. This portion of the case is fairly thin and, according to the box, should allow you to leave your Switch in it and play while docked. Unfortunately I did not have luck play my Switch Docked with this installed for some reason. Whether I was using the OEM Nintendo Dock or a 3rd party one, it just didn't work for me.
Why it RoX:
- Multiple Color Options
- Hybrid Design
- Stores 2 extra cartridges safely and discretely
- Improved ergonomics
- Only $15
What Could Be Improved:
- I could not get my Switch to play in Docked mode
- Add a 2nd game storage option under each Joy Con for a total of 4
- More color options
Should You Buy One?
I'm not going to lie, I was disappointed that for the life of me I could not get my Switch to play in docked mode with this case installed. I tried the OEM Dock, I tried several third party docks as well, and regardless it was a no-go for me. Having to install and remove a case just to play in docked mode is an inconvenience more than anything, especially if you have kids. I'd like to see KMD update the design to make sure that you can play in docked mode. That for me, for lack of a better term, is the "killer app" when it comes to Switch Cases.
Like I said, it seems like there's a new Switch Grip Case coming out every day, so manufacturers need to do something different and special to differentiate from the masses. KMD does this well with their Dual Game Grip Case and the ability to store and transport 2 extra cartridges in the grip when you are on the go. The overall design is comfortable to hold and use, and the extra storage does add to the value of this case.
