With things starting to get back to normal, people will be traveling again soon. As such, you may have to return to traveling for business, or for leisure. As such, one of the top pack along items when you travel is of course the Nintendo Switch. While great in handheld mode, sometimes you want to unwind after a hard day on location by connecting it to a TV and playing on a television. Nintendo's stock dock travels, but not as well as I wish it would. That's where the OmniCentro comes into place, an all-in-one compact portable dock that will allow you to connect your Switch to a TV, in a package smaller than a deck of playing cards.
The OmniCentro's compact design makes it easy to throw into any laptop bag, travel bag, are quite possibly a travel case for the Nintendo Switch itself. It features a flip out prong design to plug into an electoral outlet, but it also includes an adapter and extra power cable too. It's a nice touch. The face of the unit provides a standard USB A connection, USB C to connect to your Switch, and an HDMI output. A USB-C cable is also included.
Upon connecting it to my gaming setup, I did run into an issue. It appears that the OmniCentro utilizes some form of HDCP, which means it will not pass through my HDMI Switcher box. Rather curious that they would choose to include this, I hope that they can disable before shipping. Granted, if you are going to connect to a hotel TV or use it portably you probably won't have an HDMI switcher with you, but I know people who want to use something like this as their day in and day out Switch dock. As such, this is a bit of an inconvenience.
Anytime that I test something like this what I am looking for is to see if the dock introduces any sort of lag, latency, or any graphical issues. I am pleased to report I experienced none of these, and the experience was quite nice. In fact, I actually captured gameplay footage for three Total videos using the OmniCentro. The overall experience was very good, so since I was banging out multiple videos in a day it just made sense.
Now the million-dollar question, will this brick your Switch? As this uses PD 3.0 protocol, you should be able to use it with your Switch without any issues. I am reaching out to the company to check and see if there is any sort of anti-bricking warranty. The box indicates there is an 18-month warranty, but it is unclear if that is just for the unit itself or against potentially damaging your Switch.
Why it RoX:
- Incredibly compact design
- Nice, long power and USB C cable provided
- No additional lag or latency introduced that I could tell
- Kickstarter instead of indiegogo
What could be improved:
- Not compatible with HDMI Switchers
- No HDMI cable included
- Awkward fitment of the power cord adapter
Should you buy one?
At the time of this filming, I don't have pricing, so I am unsure where this is priced compared to others on the market. I think it is very important that this is priced lower than the other ones on the market as they don't have the brand recognition and they are not the first of the market. The overall build quality seems very good, as does the results using the OmniCentro. If the price is right, this is definitely something you should look at if you're in the market for a portable travel dock for the Nintendo Switch.
