In this #YouTube #Shorts Episode, we unbox our latest arrival from both VGNYsoft and Limited Run Games in April 2021.

With recent stories of things like the PS3, PSP and PlayStation Vita stores going dark, I am a bigger fan than ever of having a physical media collection when it comes to my games. There are a few titles that, when on sale, I'll buy digitally, but it is more apparent than ever that these "digital purchases" are nothing more than extended rentals. Add in the fact that there's no difference in price between physical and digital and I will go physical any chance I can. That's where I appreciate the efforts of companies such as Limited Run Games, VGNYsoft, and others in helping bring great digital titles to a physical release.

First up is a game that I've seen John Riggs and Jay at Square Pegs (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAw79rqWGPb48n6QR13aDqg) both feature, and that's Tanuki Justice sold physically from VGNYsoft. This game reminded me so much of what I love about the Sega Master System in-terms of the looks, graphics, style and sound I knew I had to get my hands on it. While I am not a fan of Demon Sword, part of the jumping mechanics remind me of this a bit, but there's also plenty of early Mega Man games in this. I can't wait to spend more time with this title.

Next up is the box from Limited Run Games, and man, there's some classics in there. While wasn't a fan of the Shantae series when it released on the Game Boy Color, I can appreciate how popular this series has become. Back at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo in 2019, I bought my first entry into the series, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. Since then I added Shante and the Seven Sirens to the collection, and now 3 more titles are in the fold.

In 2020, Limited Run Games announced that they would be bringing more of the Shantae series to a physical release. The original Game Boy Color version of was made available on the Nintendo eShop, and shortly there after Limited Run announced physical editions of this title. Available for both the Switch and also the original Game Boy Color, Shantae, who must travel across Sequin Land, the setting of the series, to foil the domination plans of the evil lady pirate Risky Boots.

Up next was Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Ultimate Edition for the Nintendo Switch. When a mysterious crime wave sweeps Sequin Land, it’s up to Half-Genie Hero Shantae to save the day! Use Shantae’s devastating Hair-Whip Attack to send monsters flying, or Belly Dance to transform her into more powerful forms! Topple the masterminds behind each criminal caper and prepare for the ultimate showdown against Shantae’s arch nemesis – the bodacious buccaneer Risky Boots!

Finally, is Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut. Now with new features, including unlockable Magic Mode and rebalanced gameplay, the Director's Cut is the ultimate version of Risky's Revenge for Shantae fans. It sets the bar even higher with thousands of frames of animation, huge multi-sprite bosses and a quest so big it’s bursting at the seams. Guide “half-genie” Shantae through haunted wastelands, burning deserts, enchanted forests, dripping caverns and deadly labyrinths. Discover magical attacks, brew zombie coffee, save golden babies and master the art of belly dancing to transform Shantae into more powerful creatures. Use your powers to foil the lady pirate Risky Boots and save Sequin Land from certain doom. With its infectious characters, flirtatious humor and deliciously outlandish action, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge offers up all the hair-whipping, belly-dancing action you can handle.

These are 4 amazing titles I am thrilled to have in the collection. While you can still get your hands on Tanuki Justice for the Switch, the Shantae cartridges have sold out. Best Buy may get different versions in the future, those will have different box art. I think I am missing a 6th title for the Switch, but I could be wrong. The possibility of having the complete collection is pretty cool, and to keep these pristine for now I'll stick to playing the digital versions.
