Need for Father Figures in Todd Phillips The Joker

One theme in Todd Phillips' The Joker that I do not see discussed enough is the role that father figures play in the film. Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is desperately looking for a paternal figure who will recognize his value and existence in the world. There are three potential figures for Arthur: Murray, played by De Niro; Randall; and Thomas Wayne. Each one of these figures only exacerbate Arthur's feelings of disconnection and provide little-to-no comfort or guidance.
