The word "Pakistan" is derived from two Persian words, "Pak" meaning "pure" and "stan" meaning "land." Therefore, "Pakistan" literally means "Land of the Pure." It was coined by Choudhary Rahmat Ali, a Muslim nationalist, in 1933 as the name for a proposed independent Muslim state in the northern regions of India. In 1947, when India was partitioned and Pakistan was formed as a separate country for Muslims, the name "Pakistan" was officially adopted.
