Alex Carey started playing cricket at a young age and worked his way up through the ranks to eventually make his first-class debut for South Australia in 2013. He quickly established himself as a reliable wicketkeeper-batsman, and his performances earned him a call-up to the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL). Carey played a crucial role in the Strikers' title-winning campaign in the 2017-18 season, scoring 443 runs at an average of 49.22 and a strike rate of 141.06.

His excellent performances in the BBL earned him a call-up to the Australian T20I team, and he made his debut against New Zealand in 2018. Carey then went on to make his ODI debut against England later that year and was named as Australia's vice-captain in limited-overs cricket in 2019.
