It is striking to me how accurate the Founding Fathers were in describing the dangers to liberty their posterity would face. Threats today are described by the Founders like they are right here with us. How is this possible? Were they like Nostradamus predicting our future doom? No, actually, the reason they sound so present in describing our ills is due to their keen understanding of human nature, their rich knowledge about how our nature had played out time and again in history, and their deep faith that cautioned them against the nature of man and sin. So when John Adams talks about the ‘increasing circles of dependents and expectants’ draining from the people their ‘virtue, integrity and public spirit’, he is describing the gnawing effect of dependency on society generally. and on the character of an individual specifically. This quote is a warning to us about how redistribution robs a person of the confidence that comes from self-sufficiency, steals the skills that would have been developed in hard work, and creates a chaos in the soul of an adult that society is treating like a child. I hope you will read the quote and then share the quote with all of your patriot friends, and even those who believe they are ‘helping’ by making others dependent.
