At one point during the Cold War, it was just about every single military’s main battle rifle in NATO. Everybody that is, except for the United States! Look, It seemed like a complete no-brainer to adopt this rifle back in 1958 when everyone else was doing it.

In fact, our government made a backroom handshake deal with the Belgians and FN Herstal promising we’d use their rifle. They were even offering to throw in free Belgian chocolate bars if we accepted! We blew it ! It fires the powerful 7.62 mm by 51mm round at 650 rounds per minute with a range of 600 meters. The accuracy on it is reported to be outstanding

the US Forces wanted nothing to do with the original version. The rifle was so widely used by the NATO allies during the cold war days that it became known as “the right arm of the free world” I wonder what the “left arm of the free world” was holding then?
