As the American public education system faces a behavior crisis leading to an increase in fistfights, more schools are turning to restorative justice, despite evidence that it often exacerbates the problem. Restorative justice involves affirmational conversations to de-escalate problems by discussing student feelings until agreement is reached. It requires student investment and commitment. Traditional discipline methods are viewed as barbaric, and restorative justice proponents believe punishment sets students on a path towards prison and abuse. However, replacing traditional discipline with restorative justice has not resulted in a healthier, safer school environment. Rather, schools using restorative justice experience continual chaos and physical fights driving teachers away from their classroom. The National Education Association claims that restorative justice prevents the school-to-prison pipeline, but it seems to be increasing the likelihood of students being incarcerated for violent behavior. Classical methods of justice and discipline have proven to work effectively in creating a safer environment, and the push towards restorative justice by the Biden administration may have unintended consequences.
