The new relief bill offers hundreds of dollars of cash to United States Citizens, but also has two intellectual property-related bills included. Did you know about these? Well, if not, you might be one of the first to know if you watch this video by Attorney Steve®.
COPYRIGHT SMALL CLAIMS BOARD
In this video, I talk about the new small copyright small claims court proposal where copyright holders can bring claims and seek up to $30,000 in damages. If the bill is signed into law, many artists, video-makers, filmmakers, photographers, audiobook authors, designers, and others who create valuable copyrighted content can bring their cases to a three-panel board in Washington D.C.
Here is a link to my video if you want to drill down on this law: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umi-jhy1B0k
I also talk about "fair use" in this video, which again remains a critical issue in copyright law. Here is more about fair use (remember, we offer low-cost fair use opinions): https://youtu.be/IUoHdsK0E3I

STREAMING PIRACY CRIMINAL PROHIBITION
The second piece of the bill that deals with intellectual property addresses what is known as the "streaming loophole." Previously, only reproducing or distributing a copyrighted work could be deemed a felony. "Public Performance" of a copyrighted work (one of the "bundle of rights" a copyright holder enjoys) and violation of that right could only be deemed a misdemeanor. Now, in this new relief bill, it can be deemed a felony and land a willful infringer in jail for up to 10 years. This is a stiff penalty if you are operating a commercial digital transmission service and not obtaining the proper rights or permissions to stream copyrighted content.
The Protecting Lawful Streaming Act of 2020 - Most experts seem to believe accidental streaming or streaming on a private YouTube or Twitch channel, or clicking on an illegal stream will not be what the narrowly tailored law is designed to criminalize.
Hope you enjoy the video. If you have any questions or concerns about copyright issues including IPTV, streaming, boxing piracy, PPV streaming, DMCA, photo, video, music, or audiobook infringement, call us at (877) 276-5084.
