Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu speak with reporters on Parliament Hill about the two spills from Imperial Oil's Kearl oilsands mine in northern Alberta. The first release of toxic oilsands tailing water was reported in May 2022, but the Alberta Energy Regulator did not disclose the leak to local First Nation communities or to the federal and provincial governments until February 2023. A second release of 5.3 million litres of wastewater occurred on February 7.
