How to Create Polyphony with Squid Salmple | A Multi Layered, Randomized Sequence Eurorack Technique

Quick note on the patch I forgot to mention precisely in the video: to apply this recording technique, the sequenced VCO needs to be sent into the Signal In of the Squid Salmple. Otherwise you have nothing to record. To hear each channel when playing, you need to trigger them with a drum gate that uses the same configuration as per your recording configuration. If it was recorded on the first of 64 steps and on a tempo of 88, then you need to keep this configuration when triggering each of the Salmple channel, otherwise you'll get glitches and timing will be off. So before recording anything, you have to know how many steps you need and set the tempo according to the song you want to create. You can also embrace the glitch effect and break the timing if this is your thing.

The reason why I purchased the @busycircuits Squid Salmple a few months ago was to apply a unique polyphony technique with this module and my @ArturiaOfficial Keystep, using the arpeggiator. It didn't work because I was trying to record a randomized arpeggio manually.

Timing was awful.

Determined to make this technique work, I tried to time everything using the Beatstep Pro; the clock source for the Keystep and the gate source for the Squid Salmple. Recording was much better, really close to the end result I had in mind.

However, even when the Keystep was getting the clock from the Beatstep Pro and the Salmple getting the gate from it, there was a micro delay that messed with my music. I got some glitches at the beginning of the polyphonic sequence and I couldn't add melodies on top of it without feeling that something was off.

The challenge with this technique is that you need extreme precision on the recording. A fraction of a second of delay is enough to break the technique.

I wanted perfection so I continued with the experiment.

Finally, I achieved perfect precision by putting the Keystep aside and getting the notes from the Beatstep Pro as well. I was forced to migrate from a randomized arpeggio to a randomized sequence. The result isn't exactly the same, but nonetheless quite nice.

I hope you will enjoy this powerful technique that you an apply in your own way.
