Why do Russian helicopters toss or lob their rockets into the air?

This isn't just a Russian maneuver, it's an option for some pilots to shoot their rockets at an angle knowing that they will mathematically land within a certain radius of their target. This is done to reduce risk of being hit by enemy fire.
