Hawaii bike-packing day 4 (Hiking Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea) -big island

Another day of no biking. We however went to the top of Mauna loa and Mauna Kea. Still a very strenuous day.

Day 4
Climbed Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea

We left at 7am to drive to Mauna Loa first. It was like a 2 hr drive. When we got to the highest point were we could drive which was like 11400ft. We decided to hike up the mountain.
It was very rocky.
Preston (our friend) didn't make it all the way and turned around.
It said it was 8 miles but felt like a lot more.
My Brother and I got to the top, nothing special but a nice hike.
The hike though was rough because of all the lava rock.
It completely destroyed our shoes.
On the way down we decided to try a different way. Which was indicated by my brothers GPS.
It however was a horrible path to take. Started to lead us so far of that we just cut through the mountain to try and find the original path we took.
Because of that we had to go through large lava rock which was dangerous and rough. It tore up our shoes.
Lesson was to take the same path up unless the map was more specific.

We then drove up to Mauna Kea. We were able to drive all the way up to the top. It was much better than Mauna Loa. The view was better. But it was also a lot colder. We were able to get good pictures and see the telescopes. The drive up was rough, at the end point since it was not paved.
There was a good amount of people at the top. And many were sledding down the mountain.
The day was over by then. So we went back to camp ate dinner and had a good rest.
