Tunic | Part 3/ last boss/Ending | 4K 60FPS playthrough | No Commentary
REVIEW CONTINUED FROM PART 2
You assign your weapons/magic/ consumables from your inventory to just 3 buttons. 3 buttons is limited but it’s OK since the other buttons are needed constantly, but a massive problem with it, is if you want to change the button to use another item, say a bomb or another magic, the game does not pause. So while a boss is wailing on you and you have nowhere to hide, you don’t have time to change your tactic or item that is spent because you will get punished and get killed.
Given the fact that one of these buttons needs to be assigned to a sword, you only have 2 buttons left for items. Choosing 2 items from all of your magics, health items, potion items, bombs, etc makes them pretty much useless and forces you to use your sword. Maybe keep the health potion handy if you know for sure this is your best run at a boss and are willing to risk them going for good.
This completely ruins tactics as you might have plans to use a certain item but with only a combination of 2 items, there is not much you can do.
The last part of the game is a slog too. You turn into a ghost so everything goes dreary and grey. The once vibrant graphics that made this game stand out take a sombre and depressing tone that I just didn’t want to be part of anymore. Especially with the looming inevitability of even harder bosses coming. You ned to traverse the whole game again with the bonus of a warp dodge feature which enables you to get to platforms that you couldn’t traverse before. This sounded great at first because I thought I would be able to mop up anything I had missed. This was only partly true as some areas are completely blocked off now and anything you missed beforehand is missed for good. Furthering the impossibility of gaining more coins for consumables.
There are some end game secrets which I thought I would be able to get because the user manual hinted at them and I thought they might help me, but after getting to the end of the game and doing everything I could think of, I looked at a guide and basically the obscurity of these puzzles are so ridiculous, no one is supposed to figure it out on their own. Like Fez’s super secrets, it’s meant to be worked out by the internet community. Which is fine but when you think you can do it yourself and you waste time only to find out you were never going to work it out in the first place, was just deflating. I gave up on these side quests as they weren’t going to get me anything good anyway and I just wanted to be finished with this game as I was mentally exhausted.
So, I started the final boss. I nearly did it on my second go. I thought, so far, not so bad. Then about 100 tries later, I couldn’t get anywhere near as far as I got on my second try. I wasn’t getting any better. Just worse. There should not be any boss fight that exists that you are getting worse. In the end I had to bite the bullet and put the game in easy mode which I refused to do for so long. It still wasn’t easy. I kept going and on my second attempt I decided this was going to be the one. I was going to bet my final health consumables on this fight. If I used them and still died, I would have cried. I used them all and both our health was down to the last hit. I didn’t even know if it was the last hit for the boss but I didn’t trust myself to dodge his last attacks so I just went for it and kept swiping. I wasn’t sure who died at first but to my huge relief, it was the boss.
I was so glad I could go to bed and not have to play this game again. What started off as a beautiful Zelda-like turned sour at the end. I might sound negative but these griped really bugged me and what could have easily been a 9/10 game forced me to think of it in a negative way when looking back.
I am actually a souls-bourne veteran, but I didn’t want this sort of difficulty in a game like this. What was supposed to be relaxing and a fun world to explore turned out to be a real slog.
