According to philosopher and transhumanist philosopher Nick Bostrom, transhumanism can be defined as “a cultural and intellectual movement that advocates for using technology to extend human physical and mental capabilities.”
The idea of transhumanism has been around for decades and has roots in futurism and science fiction. However, the term “transhumanism” was first coined by British biologist Julian Huxley in 1957. Since then, the movement has gained momentum, with many experts and organizations discussing the ethical and societal implications of this emerging field.
One of the key goals of transhumanism is to achieve a state known as “posthumanity,” where humans have surpassed their current biological limitations through the use of technology. This includes the use of bionic implants, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence. According to transhumanist researcher and author Martine Rothblatt, the posthuman future will be “a world of superintelligent and superhealthy individuals who work together to eliminate disease, poverty, and other sources of human suffering.”
