SOUTH Korean and U.S. troops staged joint military drills and practised the building of pontoon bridges to ferry armoured vehicles as well as other military equipment across rivers, the defence ministry in Seoul said on Wednesday (March 15).

About 400 soldiers, 50 military equipment and two Apache helicopters were mobilised for the joint exercise on Monday (March 13) in Yeoncheon, about 65 km (40 miles) north of Seoul, the ministry said.

The allies say the drills are necessary to deter North Korea, which has launched a record number of missiles over the past year, raising fears of a new nuclear detonation for the first time since 2017.

North Korea condemns the joint drills as a rehearsal for invasion and proof of hostile policies from Seoul and Washington.

Its state-run television KRT on Monday (March 13) said North Korea test fired two strategic cruise missiles from a submarine the day before, just as U.S.-South Korea military drills were due to begin.
