Studies on the composition of the fecal flora during a long-term nutrition experiment with high carbohydrate, high fat, and high protein diets.
Abstract:
"During a long-term test with high carbohydrate (104 days), high fat (81 days), and high protein (51 days) diet the pH, total germ count, and bacterial composition of the feces of a healthy test-person have been determined.

The different types of diet did not have any influence on the pH-values. The total germ count was the highest with the high carbohydrate diet. High fat diet reduced the Enterococci and anaerobic Lactobacilli (bifidus) in favor of the Bacteroides. High carbohydrate diet stimulated the anaerobic Lactobacilli and suppressed the Bacteroides. High protein diet showed no changes as compared with the normal diet.
