A Defining Moment of the French Revolution: The Women's Riot | Profit From the Past October 5, 1789

On October 5, 1789, women in the marketplaces of Paris began rioting over the high price of bread.
The unrest was further fanned by revolutionaries seeking political reforms and a constitutional monarchy for France. It then snowballed into a mob of thousands of people who overran the city armory and ransacked it for weapons.

From there, the crowd marched on the Palace of Versailles itself where it confronted King Louis XVI. And the next day, they forced the king, his family, and most of the French Assembly to return with them to Paris.

In this way, they ended the king's independence and established a new balance of power that displaced the French nobility and elevated the common people as the Third Estate.It was then that the march on Versailles became a defining moment of the French Revolution.

250 years later, political unrest and even violence is still a grizzly fact of life. And truly, protests, uprisings, and riots are becoming more commonplace in America and elsewhere around the world. Unfortunately, they seem to be growing more violent, as well.
