Plane shot upon departure in Indonesia 🇮🇩

A few days ago, a gunfire incident led to the suspension of Trigana Air flights to Dekai, Papua, in eastern Indonesia. On March 11, 2023, Trigana Air flight IL 222 to Jayapura was targeted and shot at by separatists belonging to OPM (West Papua Liberation Army). Although the 30-year-old Boeing 737-500 with tail number PK-YSC was able to land safely, this attack has prompted Trigana Air to temporarily suspend all flights to Dekai.

The OPM has been waging a separatist insurgency in Papua for decades, and this incident is just the latest example of their violence against civilian and government targets. The Indonesian government has been working to address the grievances of Papuan separatists, but this incident highlights the continuing challenges of resolving this longstanding conflict.

OPM also still holds hostage a New Zealand pilot flying for Indonesian airline Susi Air and the Indonesian military is active in the region.
