Oscars 2023's 10 Biggest Snubs & Surprises
Oscars 2023 celebrated the grandeur of Hollywood, but there were several snubs and surprises across the categories that also made it a wild ride. The 95th Academy Awards didn't pass without ruffling a few feathers as a result of its snubs and surprises, but one of Hollywood's most celebrated institutions was otherwise wholly committed to lifting its winner's circle, including many beloved icons and favorite films of 2022. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time, Oscars 2023 intended to be a return to form, full of Old Hollywood glamour, sensible jokes, and a newfound commitment to diversity and inclusivity....
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time, Oscars 2023 intended to be a return to form, full of Old Hollywood glamour, sensible jokes, and a newfound commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Everything Everywhere All At Once led the pack with 11 nominations, while The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet On The Western Front each boasted nine a piece. This set the stage for a dramatic evening. The road to Oscars 2023 was already full of snubs prior to the awards ceremony even beginning. Even though Asian performers were more prevalent in acting categories than any prior year in Oscar history, female directors for movies like The Woman King were nowhere to be found among the nominees. Despite the 94th Academy Awards being mostly overshadowed by Will Smith and Chris Rock's altercation, Oscar 2022 had plenty of snubs and surprises and Oscars 2023 was no different. The emotional highs and lows of the night came from fan-favorite front-runners making impassioned acceptance speeches. Nevertheless, for all the graciousness, there were still several shocks. Here are the Oscars 2023 biggest snubs and surprises. 10 Surprise: Pinocchio Winning Best Animated Film One of the first surprises of the night came early when Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio won Best Animated Feature, beating out popular films like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and teaching an important lesson; the House of Mouse and Dreamworks aren't the only studios producing quality animated movies. Del Toro made Oscar history by becoming the first person to win Best Picture, Best Director, and now Best Animated Feature. Just as Del Toro defended animation at the Golden Globes, he used his Oscar acceptance speech to remind the audience of something that sometimes gets forgotten; "Animation is cinema. Animation is not a genre. Animation is ready to be taken to the next step. Keep animation in the conversation." 9 Snub: Angela Bassett Losing Best Supporting Actress To Jamie Lee Curtis The competition was fierce across all acting categories at Oscars 2023 but particularly for two women in the category of Best Supporting Actress. Jamie Lee Curtis was up for her quirky role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, while Bassett was looking to take home gold for her commanding performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. For Curtis, it was her first Oscar nomination over a 40-year career, and aside from Bassett's Oscar nomination breaking an MCU trend by securing acting recognition for a superhero movie, it also happened to be her first nomination in 29 years. However, even this significant breakthrough couldn't secure the win. 8 Surprise: Ke Huy Quan Winning Best Supporting Actor Just because he was favored to win based on the Critics' Choice Award and Golden Globes victories, Ke Huy Quan wasn't necessarily expected to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Beating out industry veterans like Brendan Gleeson for the Academy Award, Quan bounced to the microphone and unleashed a torrent of emotion about what being recognized for his acting as an adult meant to him. For someone who has primarily been remembered for roles in the sequel to Indiana Jones and The Goonies as a child actor, the win signified his transformation into a respectable leading man. 7 Snub: The Banshees Of Inisherin Leaving Empty Handed Despite 9 Nominations Along with the rest of the so-calle...
