Scream VI continues the wildly meta and self-aware film industry commentary of the Scream series with all of the familiar winks and nods to what it’s doing as it’s telling you what it’s doing while it’s doing it.

These movies are something you just gotta sit back and adore for what they are: people in a movie talking about movies while trying to guess the end of their own movie. It’s like somebody taking a joke way too far, but because they’re aware that they’re doing so, it takes something otherwise trite to a level that is just plain clever.

If Scream, AKA Scream 5, was all about analyzing the reboot sequel, “requel” phenomenon and “toxic” fandom, Scream VI is about the franchise, where everything has to be bigger and bloodier than everything that came before while also ceremoniously killing off select legacy characters that would never have been killed back during the initial sequels.

However, that’s not what this movie is, which is unfortunate as this is a series that’s all about each installment knowing exactly what installment it is. The film commentary dialogue SHOULD have been about the “nostalgia” and "fan-service" trend, especially when a major part of the movie is a literal Ghostface Killer SHRINE. Instead, it’s as if all of the meta-commentary was just more of the same franchise talk from the last movie.

So while this installment may have the horrifically entertaining set pieces that are a franchise staple, it doesn’t have the same level of purpose in its self-awareness, and once that core element of Scream is weakened, it’s nothing more than a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. Please, Scream producers, if you’re going to succeed with this rebooted series, we need you to escalate to absurdity. We need you to jump the shark while also being self-aware that you are doing so. Otherwise you’re just giving us more of the same, thereby becoming one of the washed up franchises you were once so great at making fun of.
