Does the Retron5 Play Virtua Racing?

In our recent review of the Hyperkin Retron5, I realized I never tested out a few games I normally use to test the capabilities of a clone system. That's all on me for filming while tired, but I can revisit them now. Let's take a look and see if Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Racing work on the Retron5.

The issue with Virtua Racing is that Sega had to do some extra work to get it working on the Genesis/Mega Drive. They Developed the Sega Virtua Processor (SVP), an extra chip created to enable a home version on the Genesis and Mega Drive. While this did work on original hardware, 3rd party consoles have, mostly, not been able to touch the game.

Upon inserting Virtua Fighter into the machine first to verify the cartridge port was working (and that Virtua Fighter did indeed play) I swapped it out for Virtua Racing. Would it work? Would the Retro5 surprise us here and play this difficult game for clone consoles?

No.

Like.

No.

It didn't even recognize that the game was in the system. I expected the system to try to dump the ROM but eventually fail, but it didn't even do that. And this was truly disappointing. If you are looking for a Retron5 and want to play Virtua Racing, just know it won't do it.
