Deuteronomy 3-4 | "The Lord Was Angry With Me Because of You"
Deuteronomy 3-4 recounts the Israelites' journey through the wilderness and their conquest of various territories. In chapter 3, Moses recounts how the Israelites defeated the king of Bashan and the king of Heshbon. However, Moses admits to God that he was not allowed to cross the Jordan River into the promised land because he had disobeyed God's command by striking the rock to bring forth water instead of speaking to it.
In verse 26, Moses admits that he pleaded with God to let him cross over the Jordan and see the good land beyond it. However, Moses acknowledges that he lacked humility before God, saying "But because of you the Lord was angry with me and would not listen to me. ‘That is enough,’ the Lord said. ‘Do not speak to me anymore about this matter."
Overall, Deuteronomy 3 emphasizes the importance of obedience to God and the consequences of disobedience. Moses' lack of humility in chapter 3 serves as an example of how pride can lead to disobedience and separation from God.
Deuteronomy 4 continues Moses' address to the Israelites before they cross the Jordan River into the promised land. In this chapter, Moses emphasizes the importance of obeying God's commands and keeping the covenant that God made with them at Mount Sinai. He reminds the Israelites of the many wonders and signs that God performed for them during their time in the wilderness, and urges them to remember and obey the laws that God has given them.
Moses warns the Israelites against idolatry and reminds them that they are to worship only the Lord their God. He reminds them of the consequences of disobedience, including exile and captivity, but also assures them that if they repent and turn back to God, he will be merciful and restore them.
Moses also sets apart three cities of refuge on the east side of the Jordan River, where someone who accidentally kills another person can flee and be protected from revenge. He emphasizes the importance of establishing a just and fair society, based on God's laws and principles.
Overall, Deuteronomy 4 emphasizes the importance of remembering God's laws and commands, staying faithful to the covenant, and seeking justice and righteousness. Moses' words serve as a call to obedience and faithfulness as the Israelites prepare to enter the promised land.
