PM 10 And PM 2.5 Air Pollution

There are two major categories of particulate matter pollution.One is PM10, and the other is PM2.5. PM 10 is inhalable particles with a diameter that's about 10 micrometers or smaller, and PM 2.5 are around 2.5 micrometers or smaller.

The average human hair is about 50-70 microns in diameter, and hair is about 13 times larger than fine PM 2.5 particles. PM particles come in many sizes and shapes, and there can be hundreds of different chemicals. You can find these particles at construction sites, unpaved roads, fields, smokestacks, or fires.

PM 2.5 particles can bypass the nose, throat and penetrate deep into the lungs. And some of these particles can even enter the circulatory system.

Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC)

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are compounds that become gases from solids or liquids. VOCs are volatile because they evaporate at room temperature. Because it's impossible to track them all, we measure them with TVOC, which estimates the amount of VOCs in a given space. An air quality monitor can detect Volatile Organic Compounds. TVOC readings measure in parts per billion or micrograms per cubic meter.

Many indoor VOCs come from everyday household and office staples, such as paint and solvents, glue, carpets, electronic devices, printings, oil and gas, air, fresheners, new furniture, building materials, and much more.

The short-term side effects of VOCs include irritated eyes, nose, or throat, bleeding problems, allergies and asthma, kidney damage, dizziness, headaches, cancer, fatigue, and sick building syndrome.

Air Pollution Cancer

The European Environment Agency (EEA) investigated the links between cancer and the environment. The organization estimated that air pollution was behind around 10% of European cancer cases.

Some researchers from Hong Kong and the UK studied long-term exposure to fine PM. Every ten micrograms per cubic meter of increased exposure to PM 2.5 increased the risk of dying from cancer.

About 100,000 worldwide lung cancer deaths annually are because of air pollution. Poor air quality can lead to poorer cancer survival. The most common carcinogens are asbestos, radon formaldehyde, and benzene.

Ohio Train Derailment

A freight crane carrying hazardous materials derailed on February 3rd, near East Palestine in Ohio. Toxic chemicals leaked into the air, soil, and creeks in the area. Eleven of the derailed cars were transporting toxic materials. Five contained vinyl chloride and other toxic chemicals.

Vinyl chloride is often used to create poly vinyl chloride for pipes, cable coatings, furniture, automobiles, and adhesives. It's a carcinogen and should be handled with extreme caution.

Improve Air Quality

EPA recommends that you control the source, ventilation, and filtration indoors. The best way to enhance indoor quality is to eliminate the source. Do your hobbies, such as welding, soldering, sanding, or painting outside, and avoid cleaning your home with toxic chemicals. Instead, use non-toxic products to clean your home.

Use air-tight containers to store toxic products. Keep chemicals with VOCs away from people in a shed or other storage areas. Or you can dispose of unused chemicals through your community's household hazardous waste collection system.
