US Increases Military Support for Somalia's Fight Against Al-Shabab. The United States is ramping up its military aid to Somalia as the East African country continues its campaign against the extremist group al-Shabab. On Tuesday, the US sent 61 tons of weapons and ammunition to Somalia in support of the country's military offensive against the group.
According to the US government, Somalia has made significant progress in battling al-Shabab, which it considers the "largest and most deadly al-Qaida network in the world." The country's efforts have included recapturing dozens of communities since August.
In a joint statement with Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Britain, the US pledged to support Somalia's efforts to manage weapons and ammunition. The statement added that this support could potentially lead to the lifting of the United Nations Security Council's arms embargo on the country.
Somalia's president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, declared "total war" on al-Shabab last year. The extremist group has controlled parts of the country for over a decade and has carried out devastating attacks while exploiting clan divisions and extorting millions of dollars a year.
The current military offensive was partly sparked by local communities and militias who were driven to the brink by al-Shabab's harsh taxation policies during the country's worst drought on record. The federal government quickly lent its support, and neighboring countries Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti have agreed to a joint "search and destroy" campaign against the group.
Somalia is still recovering from decades of conflict and is looking to attract investment and shed its reputation as a failed state. Under President Mohamud's leadership, the government has been cracking down on al-Shabab's financial network and encouraging religious authorities to reject the extremist group's propaganda.
The US has an estimated 450 military personnel in Somalia after President Joe Biden reversed his predecessor Donald Trump's decision to withdraw American forces. The US provides support to Somali forces and a multinational African Union force with drone strikes, intelligence, and training.

Fair use is the right to use a copyrighted work under certain conditions without permission of the copyright owner. The doctrine helps prevent a rigid application of copyright law that would stifle the very creativity the law is designed to foster. It allows one to use and build upon prior works in a manner that does not unfairly deprive prior copyright owners of the right to control and benefit from their works. Together with other features of copyright law like the idea/expression dichotomy discussed above, fair use reconciles the copyright statute with the First Amendment.
