Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's crust through which lava, ash, and gases escape. Volcanic eruptions are partly caused by the pressure of dissolved gases, much like gas pushes the cork out of a bottle of champagne. Under a volcano, liquid magma with dissolved gases rises from fissures in the crust. As the magma rises, the pressure drops and the gas forms bubbles. How magma (lava) behaves on the surface depends on both its gas content and its chemical composition. Low-silica lava is less viscous and free-flowing, so air bubbles escape easily, while high-silica lava is more viscous (resisting flow), so trapped gas cannot slowly escape.
