Final Fantasy 4 Ultima (SNES ROM Hack) - Part 22: Superbosses Calofisteri and Tunnel Armor

After getting the legendary sword Excalibur as well as two new summons for Rydia, the sidequests continue as we take down two more superbosses: Calofisteri from Final Fantasy 5 atop the Island Peak, and Tunnel Armor from Final Fantasy 6 in a cave on the shore north of Baron!

Calofisteri is just plain annoying. She'll immediately cast Wall on herself to start the fight, and she'll counter everything with full-party Curse and Poison. She'll also steal your HP and heal herself with Drain or inflict Sap status with Vampire. And when she starts casting single-target Virus spells, she can easily one-shot a party member with that attack. She is also incredibly fast, so what you want to do is cast Wall on one of your own characters and bounce a couple Slow spells off them onto Calofisteri. You can also have Rydia bounce Level-3 spells off your walled party member as well for decent damage (or just use Wall-piercing Level-4 spells or the Leviathan summon if you have them). Edge will want to throw Shurikens, and Rosa and Cecil can use Shell to buff the party's magic defense which will help to survive the single-target Virus phase. Killing Calofisteri will give you a Seraphic Shield and 20 Artemis Arrows, the best arrows in the game.

Tunnel Armor is a semi-luck-based affair. All of its regular physical attacks have a chance to instantly kill a party member, and its other attacks (including one AOE attack similar to Yang's Kick ability) deal pretty high damage. It also counters physical attacks with physicals of its own (again, chance of instant death), so don't do this. Character skills don't trigger counters, so have Edge throw things and use the Image Ninja skill to avoid the potentially-fatal physical attacks. Rosa can use Blink on the rest of the party to help them avoid the fatal physicals, while Cecil uses Big Guard or full-party Protect to reduce the damage from Drill Pins or the AOE attack. Rydia can summon Leviathan or use Nuke if she has it. Destroying Tunnel Armor will give you Locke's Bandana, which doubles the drop rate of items from monsters (like the Treasure Hunter Augment from the 3D version of the original game).
