First Generation "Brass Mechanics"

This audio is from a cassette tape, recorded by Susan Westberry-Self (nee Susan Westberry), around 1976/1977. A group of hungry young musicians from Englewood High School, calling themselves "Brass Mechanics," were commissioned by Southside Junior High School to play at their school dance.

The band members include David Cage on vocals, lead guitar and flute, Kim Gillespie on vocals, Alan Cosper on bass guitar, Susan Westberry on keyboards, Roger Mahler on trombone, Mark Carlton on trumpet, Lary "Freight Train" Smith on saxophone and vocals and Bruce "Moose" Browning on drums.

This small video project is lovingly dedicated to the memories of Bruce, Lary and Mark, who are no doubt rocking heaven down. And of all our classmates who have left this life entirely too soon.

It is my honor and my privilege to produce this project. One day (not TOO soon, hopefully) I hope to reunite and jam with these boys. Until then, please enjoy the music of my friends from four decades ago.

NOTE: Special thanks go to Professor Jake Nicely of the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences Department of Daytona State College, who kindly "baked" the 40 year old cassette to ensure it would not destroy itself when played back, and then converted the analog recording to digital format prior to this editing and upload. Thanks Jake!
