This video footage shows the shocking conditions with freezing winds in which rescuers are still searching for any survivors among the migrants that ended up in the water when their wooden boat broke apart on rocks off the coast of Calabria.

The tragedy killed at least 61 people, among them women, children, and an infant. The death toll is anticipated to increase as is expected that few people would have stood a chance of surviving the bad weather currently in the Mediterranean Sea.

Three lifeless bodies washed ashore on the beach close to Staccato di Cutro in Southern Italy early on Sunday morning.

According to reports, the boat had between 140 and 150 individuals on board when it left Izmir, Turkey, a few days earlier. 80 people who were clinging to the wreckage of the boat were pulled from the ocean. The survivors were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.

The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, blamed people traffickers for the Treasury. She proclaimed that it was unlawful to send 200 people off in inclement weather when they were crammed aboard a small boat that was only 20 meters long. She also denounced the traffickers for gambling with the lives of the men, women, and children that were desperate for a ticket that they believed would give them new opportunities in Europe.

Matteo Piantedosi, Italy's interior minister, is urging new legislation to stop perilous travel. He said: "We must take every possible measure to deter individuals from being duped by the fictitious promise of a better life and from embarking on these perilous journeys, he proclaimed.

The hard-right government of Meloni made stopping migrant boats a primary goal, and last week the parliament passed legislation that make it more challenging for Charities to conduct rescue operations. They've changed the law a little bit so that saving lives is now against the law.

Pope Francis prayed for the migrants who escaped the shipwreck and all of the victims on Sunday at the Holy City. He expressed gratitude to all who had helped and hoped that the Virgin Mary would heed his request for help.

More than 11,000 people have traveled to Italy by water so far this year, 678 of them arrived in Calabria. It's a record-breaking number all the more remarkable because of the bad weather.

Usually, rather than those from the Middle East and Asia, people from African nations are the ones that arrive. Why not travel to the Mediterranean if you're looking for a fun vacation? The majority of these boats leave from Libya.

After all, we live in a small world. The Central Mediterranean route only receives 8.3% of arrivals from Pakistan, 6.7% from Afghanistan, and a pitiful 0.7% from Iran. With a staggering 17.3% of the total tourists hailing from Ivory Coast and 13.1% from Guinea, Africa makes up the majority of the remaining travellers.

The remaining countries are all from other parts of Africa, notably North Africa. Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have tragically died while using this route. Thus, remember to pack your life jacket if you're making travel plans.
