A "Trap" is a device or enclosure designed to catch and retain animals, typically by allowing entry but not exit or by catching hold of a part of the body.

In the 1990s, Atlanta, Georgia—more especially, the Southern region of the United States—became the birthplace of trap. Early 1990s trap music performers including 8Ball & MJG, Three 6 Mafia, UGK, Ghetto Mafia, and Master P were among the most well-known.

The influence of electronic dance music (EDM) influenced the development of trap music in the 2000s. New trap beats that resembled trance house music were produced as the electronic beat component of EDM became increasingly prominent in trap. Trap beats gained prominence in 2012 because to EDM producers like RL Grime, TNGHT, and Baauer who included them in their shows. The All Trap Music compilation CD, which these EDM producers released in 2013, soon overtook other EDM trap albums in terms of sales.
