On November 30, 2021, Ethan Crumbley shot and killed four classmates at a high school in Oxford, Michigan. He was charged with, and has since pled to, four counts of murder and charges of terrorism. He is awaiting sentencing and faces up to life in prison.

His mother Jennifer, and step-father James are being charged with four counts of Involuntary Manslaughter under the theory that they knew Ethan was mentally ill, refused to help him and purchased him a 9mm pistol regardless. After much appellate work the Supreme Court of Michigan determined that the Crumbleys are allowed to argue whether their conduct falls under the Manslaughter statutes.
