President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered military commanders to send reinforcements to help Ukrainian troops defending the besieged eastern city of Bakhmut. Ukrainian authorities say that only a few thousand of the original 70,000 people living in Bakhmut remain.

The battle for the eastern city is now the longest and bloodiest of the year-long war. Russia says seizing Bakhmut would be an important step toward capturing the industrial Donbas region. Western defense officials say the city has little strategic value militarily -- but that victory there would be symbolically important to Russia.

DW spoke to Petro Poroshenko, on what needs to happen to end the war in Ukraine.
