Discussion of why the modern military rifles uses "raised sights" "masted sights" or "elevated sights". Kind of a lot to cover every aspect in 60 seconds, but basically comes down to ergonomics producing a proper sight picture in relation to the rifles configuration.

*secondary reasons for raised sights;

-Masted or raised sights lend better resistance to heat mirage from select fire weapons in full auto or burst modes. Heat mirage can distort the sight picture of iron sights.

-The higher sights above the bore allow a better battlesight zero as compared to sights lower to the bore

-Stocks that slope down, and have a high bore recoil very badly. Also resulting in less consistent cheek weld.

-The straight line system dampens recoil immensely and in turn less recoil torque is exherted on the weapon. This is why so many rifles go to the barrel to stock "in line" configuration and in turn why we see so many modern military rifles with raised or mast sights.

**technically the rear sight block on an AK is a "raised sight tower" with a leaf sight on top, but it still is correct in that it sits near flush to the gas system and bolt carrier whereas if inverted system the raised sight wouldn't be as important since the rear stock is more like a traditional hunting stock configuration to get proper cheek weld without raised sights. The M14 rifle is a good example of what i am saying. Sights aren't as raised, traditional stock, gas Piston and op rod is under the barrel instead of over top of the barrel.
