BREATH CONTROL UNDER STRESS

Normally we'd love to break our shots during a respiratory pause but many times stress shoots, or reality, it won't pan out that way.

Your carotid artery contains sensors that are constantly giving your brain feedback about when we need to bring in more O2 and expel CO2.

If we are under extreme physical duress your O2 delivery systems are clearly going to be stressed. As we get set in position to make a shot and we exhale to utilize the respiratory pause, that lack of O2 and fast build up of CO2 is going to send strong signals to the brain to BREATHE while you are trying to apply your fundamentals of marksmanship.

Imagine if you run 1 lap around the track at max effort then try to accomplish a task that requires small motor unit recruitment such as placing a pin on a map in the perfect spot. Would you perform better if you exhaled completely while attempting to do this or take in a large breath and hold it?

There are many breathing techniques out there but this one has seemed to work for me and tons of people we have worked with all the way from Hi-Speed "Operators" to the Everyday Citizens.

What are your thoughts? Try this out during your next stress test and see if it makes a difference for you! Oh and if you aren't doing stress tests on a consistent basis we may have a problem... fix it!
