TO TIP OR NOT TO TIP? THAT IS THE QUESTION
WHEN DID SERVANTS SET TIPS?
A tip is a gratuity, not an obligation.
As the civility that once bound a unified society leaks into the cracks and fissures of jungle life, more and more people feel ‘entitled’ to that which is not necessary an entitlement. Take for example, a DoorDash driver who decided that an $8 tip just wasn’t enough. Following is a link to the now viral video of her cursing a customer and withholding his order because she felt that an $8 tip was just not enough.

YA WANT MORE MONEY? GET A REGULAR JOB!
She is obviously surrendering her right to a minimum wage in exchange for the convenience of doing spot delivery for DoorDash.
The first problem is the obvious one, and that is that people are no longer civil toward one another and virtually everybody is out for ‘their piece of the pie’, good manners and service be damned. Here it is in black and white, when someone is in food delivery, as well as many other menial job positions, a tip is just that, a ‘Tip’. It means the patron is expressing his or her gratitude for the service you provide. Yes, oh intrepid DoorDash driver, you are but a servant. You are a servant to whomever you deliver to. Get used to it or get a job!
I tip cab drivers, wait staff, doormen, and anyone with whom I am pleased but I’ll be damned if I’ll let a servant dictate to me what is enough and what is not enough in the tipping business. I am supposed to be the principle reason for why people like this woman even have a job. That’s right, “No money … no job.”
I resent the perennial non-tippers out there, those just too damned inconsiderate to tip at all. I equally understand why a tip is a good idea for delivery people, like DoorDash drivers, who make their income on tips. But here’s the answer, “If you want guaranteed earnings, get a regular job. Nationwide there are millions of businesses crying for hired help at $12 ~ $14 an hour. Even someone as hopelessly unskilled as an assistant dead animal recovery tech can qualify for any of these menial positions.”
In the case of this self-entitled little Gen-X or Z or whatever the hell they call themselves these days the answer is simple: provide good service and attitude and you get better tips. In this case I’d have let her keep the damned food and then I’d call the restaurant and cancel payment. If it was a cash delivery then she’d be standing on my doorstep until doomsday! I just might ‘Release the hounds.’
“To tip, or not to tip?” That is the question.
I’m Max, and that’s the way I see it!
