Did you know, that all of the planets, except for Earth and Uranus, were named after Roman gods and goddesses?
MERCURY – is the smallest planet in our solar system and the closest to the Sun. Mercury is only slightly larger than Earth's Moon. From the surface of Mercury, the Sun would appear more than three times as large as it does when viewed from Earth, and the sunlight would be as much as seven times brighter. In greek mythlogy Mercury was Hermes, the messenger of gods.
VENUS - Even though Venus isn't the closest planet to the Sun, it is still the hottest. it's so hot on Venus that metals like lead would be puddles of melted liquid. Venus is similar in size to Earth just a little smaller.In greek mythlogy Venus is Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.
EARTH - Our home planet Earth is a rocky, terrestrial planet. We can say that it is a water planet, since water covers 70% of Earth's surface.The name Earth is a Germanic word, which simply means “the ground.” Earths personification is Gaea, the first generation of primordial deity, mother goddess, and mother of Uranus (Heaven), Cronus (Saturn) and other Titans.
In Roman mythology she is the – goddess Terra
MARS - is a cold desert world. It is half the size of Earth. Mars is sometimes called the Red Planet. It's red because of rusty iron in the ground.In greek mythlogy Mars is Ares, god of war.
ASTEROID BELT – asteroids are sometimes called minor planets, that are made of rock, metal and dust. They have no air. The majority of known asteroids orbit within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
JUPITER - is the biggest planet in our solar system. It's similar to a star. t has big storms like the Great Red Spot, which has been going for hundreds of years. Jupiter is a gas giant and doesn't have a solid surface. In greek mythology Jupiter was regarded as Zeus, who rules as king of the gods on Mount Olympus
SATURN – Saturn is a gas giant like Jupiter. It is made mostly of hydrogen and helium. In greek mythlogy Saturn was the god Cronos, king of Titans, god of time. He defeated Uranus and then was himself defeated and exiled from Olympus by Zeus (Jupiter).
URANUS - Uranus also has faint rings. The inner rings are narrow and dark. The outer rings are brightly colored and easier to see. Like Venus, Uranus rotates in the opposite direction as most other planets. In greek mythlogy personification of the heaven, the first king of gods. Roman name is Caelus. The astronomers at the time started with the name 'Caelus,' read Kay-luh-s"/ went over to Greek for 'Ouranos,' and then latinized 'Ouranos' to make 'Uranus.'
NEPTUNE - Neptune is dark, cold, and very windy. Neptune is very similar to Uranus. Neptune has six rings, but they're very hard to see. In greek mythlogy Neptune was Poseidon, god of sea and waters. Beyond Neptune, a newer class of smaller worlds called dwarf planets reign, including longtime favorite Pluto.
