Women beat men with sticks in holy festival

It’s called Lathmar Holi, and the ladies are clearly enjoying themselves. The men? Not so much. These women show off their girl power in the only way they know how – beating him with a large wooden stick as he cowers under a small wooden shield, hoping to have enough strength in his neck to avoid being killed. In celebration of the violence, colorful powder is thrown wildly into the air.

The residents of this Uttar Pradesh town seem to be enjoying themselves, or at least the women do. ‘Holi is a symbol of love for Radha Krishna [an unbreakable mixture of a masculine and feminine god, held together by love],’ said one resident, Sunita. ‘We feel so happy and it’s really a symbol for love.’

‘Ow,’ said a male resident.
