Environmental activist and whistleblower, Erin Brockovich, delivered remarks on Thursday regarding the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment and catastrophic chemical spill that took place a few weeks ago.

Brockovich told the audience to not ignore their symptoms and encouraged the community to advocate for themselves, as the potential health hazards from the spill could last years, even decades.

This comes after rail workers clearing the crash site — where a Norfolk Southern train derailed and leaked toxic chemicals last month — are falling ill on the job, union leaders said in a letter sent to federal, state and municipal officials.

Previously, Brockovich spoke in East Palestine, informing residents of what it would take to mount a lawsuit following Norfolk Southern's train derailment.

Leaders from 12 unions met in Washington, D.C., with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Amit Bose, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, on Wednesday to discuss the disastrous train derailment that threatened to explode and flatten a small Ohio town. To avert the explosion, crews drained hazardous materials from the train cars in a controlled burn that sent up a massive cloud of toxic gas.
