Michigan injection well that took Ohio train waste has checkered past

A disposal site in metro Detroit which accepted hazardous waste from the Ohio train derailment disaster in East Palestine is facing civil penalties for recent legal violations, according to Michigan regulators.

In Romulus, an injection well used to dispose of liquid waste from the Ohio cleanup was found in violation of hazardous waste handling rules last summer, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).

The problems have been fixed and an administrative consent order, which is a type of negotiated settlement between regulators and a company found in violation of operating rules, is being finalized between well owner Republic Services and EGLE, according to state officials.

The pending order is likely to contain civil fines, the state says. A federal database which shows the facility out-of-compliance won’t be updated until the order is finalized.
