Australia’s Capital Insurrection- the 1996 Canberra Riots

On 19 August 1996, trade unions, aboriginal and left-wing groups organised an event at Australian Parliament House to protest the federal budget.

Labor leader Kim Beazley, Greens Senator Bob Brown, Democrats Senator Cheryl Kernot and Australian Council Of Trade Union president Jennie George incited the crowd.

Rioters smashed the doors of parliament and entered the foyer of the building, smashing and looting a gift shop and injuring 90 police and security staff.

The union and political leaders deflected responsibility for the event and were not held accountable for inciting the grievous attack on Australian democracy.
